What we do
Our mission is to work with other ministries of diverse gifts and abilities of every age to make disciples of Jesus Christ as we go forth on a daily basis to where people live at home, at work, and in various social, cultural, and political settings within the local communities, nation, and the world.
Jesus closing words in the Gospel of Matthew 28:18-20, serve as our foundation for this commission that states,” All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
We carry out our mission by reaching out into the communities proclaiming the gospel in ways that seek, welcome, and gather people into Christ’s body, the church. We encourage people in their relationships to Christ and invite them to commit their lives to God through Christ, as well as nurture persons as disciples through worship, study, prayer, mission-base projects, and other disciplines of the faith.
We thank God for each Missionary Ministry in our churches for their support, cooperation, and service participation throughout the years. Truly your hard work did not go in vain: for we are the chosen vessels and ambassadors for Christ to people who need our assistance. We pray as missionaries we will continue to allow God to use us as daring persons of faith who boldly rise to make a difference, and who let their light shine in a dark world. We give total praise to God for enabling us to serve others.
Over the Years
The Northern Neck Baptist Women's Missionary and Educational Commission is grateful for the many blessings that we have received through the years. As we reflect on the history of this organization, we can plainly see God's goodness to us, both individually and collectively. From 1912 until now, we have received one success after another. For each one, we say, “To God be the glory for the great things He has done.”
Our past gives us much of which we can be proud of. Our present enables us to be grateful for that which we currently have. We face the future with a high degree of optimism, for we do not believe that God has brought us this far to leave us. The Northern Neck Baptist Women's Missionary and Educational Commission was organized as a result of the foresightedness of the Northern Neck Baptist Association. The organizational meeting of the Commission was held on Saturday, September 21, 1912, at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Downings, Virginia, Reverend H.V. Washington, Pastor. Delegates represented the following churches: Beulah Calvary Ebenezer First Baptist Zion Lottsburg Little ZIon Lively Hope Jerusalem Macedonia Sharon Mt. Olive Mt. ZIon Mulberry Potomac Queen Esther The organization began with fifteen churches, and now it has expanded to a total of thirty churches. The first business session was held on September 25, 1913, at the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in White Stone, Virginia, and the following officers were elected: Mrs. Pauline M. Edwards, President - Weems, Virginia Mrs. J. F. Gandy, 1st Vice President – Downings, Virginia Mrs. Lillian Wildy, 2nd Vice President – Burgess Store, Virginia Mrs. Betty E. Gray, Secretary – Remo, Virginia Mrs. Mary A. Williams, Assistant Secretary – Lancaster, Virginia Mrs. Kate Brittain, Corresponding Secretary – Warsaw, Virginia Mrs. P. J. Tomlin, Treasurer – Mollusk, Virginia The pioneers of this Commission, whom we have listed below, are due much recognition for first initiating the idea of such an organization and for its continued success through the years.
